Bachelors Degree or Diploma in Library and Information Sciences; appropriate knowledge of cataloguing tools; appropriate experience in the development of online bibliographic records; good communication skills in at least two of the three official languages of the Western Cape.
Recommended: 3 years experience in cataloguing and classification; Registration with the Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA).
Create new online library records by cataloguing and classifying a variety of library and information resources (print, audio-visual, digital and e-resources) collected by all EDULIS libraries; perform copy-cataloguing (WorldCat) and adapt online records accordingly; exercise quality control in order to facilitate ease of access by maintaining uniformity of access points, using the internationally established rules and standards as prescribed by DDC21, AACR2/RDA, LC Subject Headings, MARC21; promote inter-library co-operation by exporting holdings to the WorldCat database;
Perform physical checks on newly processed library resources to ensure that quality is maintained; Perform relieving circulation service duties, as required (including late afternoon and Saturday morning shifts), in order to provide a needs-driven library and information service; Provide support to all EDULIS libraries by liaising and consulting with relevant librarians to develop and maintain a user-friendly catalogue; required to remain abreast of information needs and cataloguing developments in order to keep other role players informed; perform duties required to guarantee the continuous provision of library and information functions; identify problems and initiate meetings with various role players to determine operational guidelines; assist with collection management and development processes; assist with EDULIS library projects when required, and perform diverse library administrative tasks.
Sound knowledge of bibliographic processes and procedures; thorough knowledge of library and information processes and procedures; Skills: ability to make information accessible in an integrated way to ensure optimal client retrieval; anticipation of educational trends and needs and ability to reflect changes in OPAC; checking skills to ensure superior bibliographic records and quality controlled physical preparation of library material; office administration skills; sound verbal and written communication skills; advanced computer literacy; supervision skills, when required.
